when I changed my front diff seal I inspected the bearing, in the order I took it apart was the nut, washer, yoke, seal, shim, bearing, and several thin shims. 4 to be exact. one was half missing. the local clutch store looked up parts and keeps ordering the wrong shims. Anybody know where I can just get the shim kit?

Assuming this is a stock rear diff, There aren't any shims to be replaced if your changing the pinion seal.
The only way to add or remove shims from under the pinion head is to pull the pinion from the case and pull the rear bearing from the pinion.
The only things that are able to come out the front is in order.
Nut-Washer-front bearing(bearing only not the outer race)
If the outer race comes out then you could get the crush sleeve out,but the outer race should be a press fit into the case.
I think bubba might have gotten into your diff...there shouldn't be any shims where the crush sleeve is. the only place you should find shims is behind the large pinion bearing on the inside of the housing and the posi carrier shims - you can't take either of them out without disassembling the entire unit. Please post pics and show us where you found them.
Forgot to check what year vette you have - forget my previous post. I thought you had an iron diff, but it looks like you have a dana aluminum unit. Listen to tracdogg2
1981, after removing the nut, then the yoke then removed the seal "it was leaking" then there was a shim/washer then the bearing then....4 very thin shims. seems like everyone I talk to tells me something different. the old timer transmission guy told me not all had crush sleeve. I have not removed the gears. while it is all out you can pull the pinion forward just a bit so the ring gear spins smoothly. there was no wear pattern on the gears after 26 years.

Need to replace my 81 pinion seal as well. What is the process? Do you need to take a torque reading (spinning the yolk) before taking it apart to get a number to shoot for after installing the new seal and tightening down the nut? Any feedback before I begin would be appreciated.
