My car has cruise, but I don't think it is hooled up...is the cruise vacume?
my speedo cables run from my transmission to a BOX and then from the box to the dash. I am just trying to figure out which cables to buy.
The speedo bumbs up and down as I am driving at constatnt speed. and there is a faint noise coming from the speedo.
a few members here said to just replace the cable while I have the dash out...and that lubing the cable could end up just guming up the Speedo in the long run.
Disconect the cable that goes to the dash. (disconect it at the transducer). Hook that cable up to a variable speed, reversable drill.Have some one sit in the drivers seat, then run the drill slowly to see if the spedo needle moves. If it moves like when the car is moving, speed up the drill and see if the speedo skips or whatever it's doing. If it does, that is the cable you replace, if not it's the other one. Personally, I'd change them both out. It is not all that expensive.
Hope this helps you out. Let us know how you make out.
I would bet that it's the lower cable that is bad. What happens is that the transducer starts to ware out, and puts more and more pressure on the lower cable until it eventually breaks. You could try to replace the just the bottom cable, but it will probably start to go bad again, unless you change the transducer.
If your cruise doesn't work, just put in a single cable, they are only about $25. This is what I did with my car.
There is special grease for speedometer cables. It is extremely runny. Get some at your auto supply store. Put it on cable and then run the cable through a closed hand to get rid of excess. Then you have the right amount of lubrication for the cables.
