Default How much wheel for how much tire?

Anyone know of a web page that might have a chart that would give an idea of how wide a wheel is recommended for how wide a tire? IE; How many wheel sizes can fit a 295 tire, etc.? What are the recommended minumum and maximum for that specific tread width?

In general a wheel should be 1" wider than the tread width for best handling. Keep in mind that the 225 or 255 or 295 is NOT tread width. Its maximum width of the sidewall.

Go to the respective manufacturers website for the tire yuor interested in and their tire chart will list recommended rim widths.

to get the dimensions for a tire size, ie 295/40/17, you first divide the 295 by 24.5 which would = 12.04(rounded) inches of tread width you then multiply that number by the second number, 40 which = 4.8(rounded) inches for the measurement of the side wall and of course the last is 17 inch tire. The amount of actual tread width touching the ground would be dictated by the width of the rim.

This same tire mounted on an 8" rim would yield different tread width if mounted on a 10" rim. Hope that makes sense.

The tire manufacturer should have that information on their website for each model of tire. I know Firestone does.

Kelly,

If you go to The Tire Rack web site... http://www.tirerack.com/index.jsp
you can look up just about any tire you're interested in. Select the specifications function and it will list the range of rim widths recommended for that tire size.

Good luck... GUSTO

Yes, manufacturer sites will have specs on their tires including recommended rim widths. This spec page is for Bridgestone Potenzas just as an example (which I have no affiliation with):
http://www.bridgestonetire.com/tires...roduct_ID=1063
I'm sure most tires will have very similar recommended rim widths.

Recommended rim widths are an industry standard. For example, that 295 tire, if it's a 295/35R18, is approved for use by the Tire & Rim Association on 10, 11 or 12" wide wheels.

For best handling, you want to use the widest wheel that the tire can fit on, even if the wheel is wider than the tire.

Its the sidewall height as a percentage of the sidewall width

A 100/50-15 would have a sidewall width of 100mm and a sidewall height of 50mm

A 255/60-15 has a sidewall width of 255mm and a sidewall hieght of of 153mm (60% of 255).

A 235, 245 and 255 tire could all have identical tread widths....

the aspect ratio is sidewall width to tread width. 100/55/17 = 100mm tread width / 55mm sidewall / 17" rim
