Default Guage question

Hello,
The previous owner got a hold of my 1977 guage panel and now I am working out the bugs. I just have a quick question about the factory guages (center console guages).
If I apply the ignition power to the guages but none of the sensors are hooked up (fuel sender, oil pressure, water temp sensors), what should the guages do? The volt guage reads 13v but the others, without anything hooked to them, pin themselves the the right.
I am assuming the sensors run on a resistance of some type.
Let me know if it sounds like something it hooked up wrong.
Thanks
Jim

You're correct, they read resistance. Pegging is normal if there is no reading from the sender.

If you ground the inputs, they should peg the other way.

So would i be correct saying my fuel sending unit inside the tank of my 81 is bad,if with power applied,it allways reads full, upon direct grounding it reads empty?
They are all new autometer guages.

Either that or it's out of adjustment.

No adustment on the sender, I believe it is a 0-90 ohm sender, you can check it with a ohm meter. The autometer gauges for fuel are available for the different sender resistance values.

Touche' Thanks for that info, i did not know that. So does that mean i have to replace it and match it to the ohms of my sender?

Thanks for the info. I am haveing Temp sensor issues right now. What could it be?
When the ignition is on, and everthing is plugged in the car, the temp sensor peggs to the right.
I used a jumper wire from the guage to the sender to make sure it not the factory wire and it did the same thing.
If i ground the sensor wire and turn the ignition on,the guage appears not to do anything (maybe goes to the left a little bit).
Does this mean it is a bad sensor or a bad guage?
Thanks for the help!
