Default keep breaking the starter's nose

my son bought a 66 chevelle which he was told has a corvette motor in it, supposedly a 383 but it's definately a small block chev. When he bought it the starter looked brand new, but we took it out and the 'nose' (bendix cover?) was cracked all the way around. We figured it got dropped or something so we buy a new one. Three startups later its making noise again and guess what, the brand new starter is broken the same way.

It looks like the bendix shoots out and breaks the nose off. How do we fix this? Is there some special starter we need to get? It's an atuomatic transmission I have no idea which one.

Thanks so much!!

Sounds like you need to shim the starter. Does it sound odd when cranking?

I have never seen a starter break because the bendix slams the housing, but I have seen starters break because the initial timing is set too high.

Timing causing the engine to kick back can brake the nose off. They dont like to suddenly run backwards.

Make sure that you have the brace bolted to the front of the starter that attaches to the side of the engine block. That will help.

I've had this happen on an SBC that doesn't want to run right. I've considered dropping my L48 in it's place when my new engine is built.

I guess a backfire makes more sense then the bendix breaking it off.
And I'll have to look if there is a brace on the starter, I'm thinking there was just one bolt that went up into the engine.

Thanks, you guys rock!!

If you only have 1 bolt holding your starter onto the engine then that is your problem right there, it takes 2 and the ones from factory original with the serrrated shanks are the only ones to use,,,, I've found out the hard way. The brace on the other end of the starter is also important to have, any less and its a crap shoot.
Good luck, Peace,,, Moosie
