I have a stock 69 coupe, 427/390. I want to keep it as close to stock as possible but would like to boost the HP. What woud be the quickest and easiest method without a great deal of mods?
If you want to get a real power gain only occasionally, and don't want to mess with engine internals like head and cams etc.... try a small dose of nitrous.
Just a 100 hp shot will give you a definite gain for very little outlay.
But if you like to play a lot, then refilling bottles does become a chore.
Otherwise, the traditional route of exhaust, heads and cam and larger displacement etc etc etc.... just takes more time and more money to get the results.
I agree w/ getting headers, good exhaust, & a performance hydraulic flat tappet cam. I have specs on a Crower cam I used that was very streetable and peaked on the dyno at just under 6000 RPMs. It took me to low 12's in the 1/4 mile at 112+ MPH using the stock intake but with a Holley DP carb. Hit me up for cam specs if you're interested- it'll at least get you in the ballpark if that mod appeals to you. Also make sure your carb & ignition are optimized for your combo.
However, you'll pick up alot more by getting some mild porting done on your heads & and having them fitted with oversized valves- 2.19 & 1.88. This gets into more than minor mods but will retain stock looks while giving you solid bang for your buck.
You can definitely pick up more power by upgrading your intake manifold but the Torker II is the only one that fits under the stock hood & it typically brings carb stumble/tuning problems with it. If you're willing to swap to the L-88 hood you'll have a number of very good intake choices but it doesn't sound like you want to go in that direction. Good luck.
I had that problem with mine "80" keep it stock looking .So I changed the intake installed a mild cam, and put on true duals exhaust and recurved the distributor. I had it Dynoed before and after and gained "i could not believe it myself" almost 100hp, NO ****. I have the dyno sheet . Of course I kept the old parts. Easy work too!Ron
Negative 15 because you need a higher amp power robbing alternator to run them.
I felt the difference, feels like the drivetrain has been lightened, less drag. If you want to experiment, take the fan off the water pump and hold the pulley in with some bolts, drive it around the block and see if you can feel the difference. Just watch the temp guage closely.
I can drive around all day with my fans disconnected, as long as I keep moving the temp will stay under 190.
