Pinion bearing bad???

Pinion bearing bad???
My 78 has a grinding noise coming from the rear end. At first I thought of wheel bearings. My mechanic said the noise should change with mph. It does not. I can get it to go away with a slight change in throttle. But if I push on it again the noise comes back. Could this be a bad pinion bearing? How would I check further for that? Any other ideas? I am not in a rush since I am unemployed and need tires also. Thanks, Laird

It sounds to me like a pinion or a side bearing. On solid axle cars its easy to pull the front pinion bearing and check it first, but on a vette that might not be so easy. You should probably pull the diff out and check them all, just to be safe. I just did one on an s-10 that I was sure was just the pinion bearing. When I pulled the diff it had a bad side bearing too!! Good luck
