my brother has R4 out of 87 vette along with a TH400 that he's trying to decide which to use behind the Weiland blown, vortec 350 he's dropping in a 86 IROC project he's doing. i'm trying to convince him use the TH400 and trade me for a TH350 out of an 80-81. i've heard the "earlier" 700R4's had problems but cant remember the yr of the design change that made them better.
No amount of anythng will make up for the inherently weak/overheating due to lack of lubrication/oil flow of the 3/4 clutch pack....
heard all sorts of excuses, and seen a LONG list of fixes gotta be about 5-6 solutions out there still....
use the 400 and put in a Trans Go shift kit....
A TH400? Why on earth would you want to put that dinosaur in a car if you are doing a transmission swap? It was a great transmission in its day, but with the after market parts available you can build a TH350 to take almost any abuse that a street driven car can give. Plus it is lighter and uses less power.
Check this websight out. There is a ton of good parts info on the 700R4 and other transmissions.
