I am looking at the side front fender louvers on the internet, but most have a broken stud. Is that easily removed with an easy out type drill bit, or is it part of the casting and once its broke, its broke forever? Anyone tackle this simple problem. Many Thanks
There is quite a bit of material there around the stud. I think it could be drilled out and a new stud threaded in without too much drama. Keep looking though, I found a pair with the studs intact.
There are plenty of these side louvers available on ebay. Just make sure that you buy the ones that are appropriate for 1970's if that matters to you. There are differences between 70 and later years both in how they are painted and how they are made. The part number for a 70 should be 3966797 and 8. As far as tapping and replacing the stud it should be an easy fix.
Is there a shop/supplier that specializes in refurbishment of the side grills? I've got an extra set of '70 grills that I got off ebay and the chrome was stripped.
I put a set of the 71-72's on ebay twice, in good condition. Set a reserve at $150.00. Could NOT get a bid above $60.00. Also ran them here on the forum. Nothing. U.F.B.!!!!!!!
The 71-72 crates are pretty easy to find. They were the service replacement for 1970 when they were available. In 1990 GM dumped a ton of the NOS sets cheap on the market in a GMPD clearance sale.
(At the same time they dumped seat belts, steering wheels 78-82 and all kinds of other items that were going to discontinue).
This might explain why they don't sell for as much as the 70 original crates.
