I just got an e-mail from a good friend asking my advice on C3's. I don't know much about C3's...:( He didn't include very many specifics in his e-mail. I have no idea his budget, I would guess about $10K though.
I sent him an e-mail back, hopefully that will yield more info on what he is looking for, but here is the e-mail:
Canyon,
I hope you still come around here every once in a while. My brother is looking to buy an older Corvette, preferably a black 1981. He doesn't know anything about them, and I certainly don't. Your name immediately popped into my head as a person who may be able to help out, let him know what to look for, what to stay away from, etc.
I don't know why he chose 1981, I'm assuming it has to be for the 700R4, but everything I know, you know with this e-mail. Thanks. :)
frame rust infront of the rear tires, windshield frame rust... seen by looking at the trim inside the car from the out side, look for rust, or dark red color; brake problems ie spongy pedal, streaked tires from brake fluid leaks.; Listen for vibration when you go around a turn, means that you might have diff problems... though its usually just needs additive.; look at the alignment shims at the front a arms, if there are not an the same number on each side, like 5 and 1 you need to look for fiber glass damage in the front fenders.
tell him to look for one that has the options that he wants, A/C, auto or manual that sort of stuff
Thats about all i can think of, that is C3 related... look at everything is another good thing to check...
I would say out of the 3 years, 80-82, that 82 is best fora hotrod, just put a TPI system, cam, duals, rework heads, and rebuild/replace the 700r4, and all things being equal with rest of the car, it's a wonderful hotrod....
now having said that......problems can occur with the governemnt and that wonderful EPA poopie.....
