You can not imagine the frustration I am feeling at this point.
I am "trying" to set the timing on my 77 and it is giving me the most unusual results.
Here's whats happening:
Just installed new distributor weights and springs so I can achieve full advance by 2800, thought it was proper to adjust timing. So I start by rubber-banding the weights and disco'd the vacuum can. I start her up and set the idle to around 550. Take a peek with my old timing light (not a dial back) and my timing is at 36 degrees! I don't know what the hell is going on. I decide that ill adjust the timing to 12 degrees btdc to see what happens. I can tell this isn't right at all because my car is barely running and diesels after i kill the engine. Even backfired once!
I dont know what it could possibly be any advice at all is much appreciated.
Sounds like maybe the weights are advanced. Make sure they are together. With the rotor off, study which way the dizzy turns (CW) and look at the way the weights move to a CCW direction. CCW is advanced. Make sure you tied the weights down in the correct direction. Also make sure the breaker plate is secure and the vacuum can is extended all the way.
