Default 355, planned upgrades, what do you think?

It's currently a 355 with centerbolt iron heads on it and an Edelbrock carb manifold, but I want to add a bit more grunt while the engine's out of the car awaiting installation into my '73.
Here's what I'm thinking:
GMPP Iron Vortech heads
COMP Cams XE262H
Edelbrock Performer Vortech (might present issues with the divorce-choke QJ)

During the install it's also getting Hooker sidepipes.

Is there any way around the divorce choke issue (preferably short of a new carb)?
Anything else you'd add/change?

That all looks good. Might I suggest an electric choke kit for your carb, and this is also a cam and lifter combo you should look at.

Wire the choke open or remove the choke throttle plate & screws ... a coupla shots from the acel pump & a bit of feathering should get you going in most any central CA weather. Just 'cause your VCs's might fit vortecs don't mean your intake will. If you have dished low compression pistons you'll be better off with a smaller combustion chamber like L98 / ZZ4 head (58cc vs vortec 64cc) ... see GM p/n 12556463 . Only last week I sold a nice pr of ZZ4 heads.

Your setup sounds similar to my 355. What is the cc of your heads and are you using flat top pistons? You might get some negative comments regarding the XE cam but I've not had any issues with the XE262H and have ~6K miles on it.

jackson: I'm getting an Edelbrock Performer Vortech manifold.

I was thinking the same thing about the choke, but I sometimes had issues getting it to start on cold mornings when my choke didn't work, so I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

DB, thanks. Why that particular kit? Powerband between 2000 and 4500? Is that a mistake?

Don't read too much into that. That said basic operation range, not max RPM. It's a popular cam and lifter combo for people doing the Vortec swap. Lots of good power at a good low price.

Hm, most of the time when I see an operating range it's in the ballpark of 1500-5800 or somesuch, I was just wondering why that one advertises such a narrow range.

marshrat, don't know, but I'd like to keep it off the bottle. Maybe a supercharger is in order at some point with such a low CR.
