engine hesitation!!

engine hesitation!!
Okay, finally got the car moving today after spending some time bleeding the breaks. The car a small block obviously, and is stock with the exception of new exhaust, headers and holley carb. Drove the car about 15miles and had some problems..
1.)The car is running really rich, exhaust could kill small animals.
2.)Engine stutters, hesitates and sometimes backfires when gas is given between 1000-2000rpm
3.)There is a vibration which can be felt in the center console and a little in the steering wheel in the same 1000-2000rpm range.
I'm thinking it is the timing. but I never had the problem last year. Spark plugs are brand new. The car also runs very strong in the higher rpms.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
One more thing that must be done to the car.. I'll post pics of it later, but there is a 10" long tear in the rear fender, ill save that for another thread.
