ive never done this, and i cant seem to find much info on it.
ive got poly bushings, the metal inner tube, and 4 washers, im going to try and reuse my outer sleeve.
it looks like the old bushings were flared at the end, is that right? if it is, how do i go about flaring the new parts? the inner tube ends exactly and the end of the poly bushings, and the washer isnt large enough to slip over that inner tube.
I just got a set of poly bushings from Vansteel . they give you the tool to flare the end of the inner tube. Many of the vendors sell a tool to do this but the ones that come from vansteel and VB&P come with a bolt with a flared nut on the other end that puts the flare on it. The set that I got has one side of the inner tube flared already and you just flare the other side. Mine also came with shims that I have to figure out? Go to VB&P's web site, they have the directions on how to install them. which is good because Vansteel did not send any!
The bushings I just installed in mine also came with the washers on the ends...I threw them away as I figure they were to hold the assembly together for shipping, etc.
You should have spacers that install on both sides of the trailing arm bushing for alignment..install the bushing, slide the spacers in and tighten it down....then off to the alignments shop for a 4 point alignment.
i had emailed duntov on this. just grease them up and slip them in, and put the washers on the outside. the washers and TA shims will hold it all in place.
so, is it necessarry to flare the other side of the bushing? or can you just leave it as is and place the washers and spacers in? I wouldn't see how it would make a difference...as "another-user" noted, mine ends at the same point as the bushing as well not seeming to have enough room for a flare.
I flared mine (yes, they're poly) by inserting the end of an air hammer set (actually it was the reverse end of a rivet installing driver or "set") into the unflared end of the bushing with the washer placed onto the poly bushing face. Gave it a few good whacks w/BFH and voila! Nicely, properly flared bushing.
