Default Starter flexplate help !!!!

I have 77 vet that I just put a new 350 450 hp engine in along with a beefed up tranny .The block casting #s are the same as the old 350 the problem i am having is a grinding sound from the starter when engaged I took a look at the new flex plate and it was starting to get chewed up so need less to say I installed a new one ,with 168 teeth just like the other moter had . Then at start up I heard the same grinding sound I stopped , and now I am lost as to what to look for next ,I took the starter in and had it tested it passed ,the only thing I havent done is buy a new starter this ones fairly new, should I have replaced it also with a new one !!!Lost vet owner who needs help !!!

Remove the solenoid from the starter so you can engage the drive manually. With the dust shield off you can see (check) how deep the teeth are engaging. Then add a shim or two as needed.

Alternate way is just stick a shim in and give it a try..

Sometimes the block/starter/flywheel is just a little bit off.
