Default possible to pull a cam without pulling the intake?

On a non-LS motor without those special little roller rockers, it's not possible, is it?

It can be done, but you have to get all the lifters out. If you're real good at fishing and there is no oil coked on the bottom of the lifter it IS possible. Really a PITA on a SBC. Much easier to pull the intake.

Alright, that clears it up.

A buddy of mine at work wouldn't listen to anyone say that you need to pull the intake before changing the cam. Now I can tell him that it's possible but that he'd be spending a LOT more time than it was worth.

Thanks for the reply.

Possible, but much easier to just pull the intake.

On the non-LS motors, is is possible in one special case that I know of - IF you have a solid roller cam with Crane roller lifters with the flat horizontal lifter bar between the pair, AND are not using a "rev kit", the small springs which hold the horizontal bar down will cause the roller lifters to rise in their bores when the rocker arms are removed. In this case, the lifters will clear the cam lobes and one doesn't need to remove the intake manifold to remove the cam. However, in all other cases, removing the manifold is best.

Cheers,
Larry

I have those roller lifters on my spare engine (my old 406) and they are great.. Changing cams with those is easy.. Just remove the rocker arms and you can pull out the cam!!

...and if you hang around while he tries to get them all back in place you'll likely learn some new ways to curse.
