I just finished putting a 383 stroker crate engine in a '77. I have original rebuilt trans but added a Hurst shifter. Problem I am having is the shifter is hitting the console on the driver side when going into reverse despite the spacer being in place. Any suggestions? Do I need to modify the console? Thanks.
Will it go into reverse, or does it hit before it can? I had the wrong shifter for mine. It would go into reverse, but it hit and you could see the console move a bit. I took the shifter out, put it in a vise just above where it mounts, heated it with a torch, and bent it sideways just a touch. I know, its not correct, but I didnt want to buy a new one!!
There should be a slight bend in the shifter handle (stick) right above the bolt holes. If the stick is not bent it will hit the console when being put in reverse. I bought a straight short stick that needed to be bent to work correctly. If you have the bend going in the wrong direction I would imagine you can not get the tranny in reverse.
my shifter looks straight. maybe, I have the wrong one or it needs to be bent. there is a spacer where it bolts in which I think is supposed to offset it to allow clearance for reverse, but I don't think it's enough.
yep the stick needs to be bent a little. It is only a couple degrees. I used a socket and a press to make the bend. Used the original hurst stick as a template. The bend moves the ball towards the pass side.
