Default engine books

I'd like to buy a block and start building my own engine. I understand how one works , but I don't understand why you pick which cam and other parts. My question is are there any good books that show how to build chevy engines? I don't understand exactly what makes you pick a certain cam with certain duration and lift.
Also I'd like to rebuild the top end of the stock engine while it's in the car are there any good reference materials for this application? Hopefully adding a little more to the stock motor will get me by until I can get the engine I want built.

The Vizard book above is an excellent resource, but I would also get something a little newer. I used that book in combination with web searches and this forum for a lot of sanity checks.

Vizard's other books are also very good. He's got one on building high HP small blocks on a budget that has 10 preset combinations in the back. Again, grain of salt here as many of the parts he references are not the best choice today. For example, there's a lot of mention of porting 186 and other 'fuelie' heads in the book. That's fine if you have them, but if you're replacing heads, you can easily beat their performance much cheaper than rebuilding 40 year old cores (ask me how I know ). That's where tthe forum comes in.

You can get an idea of the book's vintage by the pictures. Unless I'm mistaken, lamb chops haven't been fashionable for quite a few years.
