Default How do you "load up an engine" with an automatic transmission?

I want to check and see if I have too much advance and I read in the Forum that one way to check is to "Put a load on the engine by starting off in 4th gear, with the accelerator pedal to the floor and if the engine pings & knocks, then you have too much advance" This is all fine and good if you have a 4-speed manual...but how do you "load up an engine" with an automatic transmission?

Hi Stuart,

One instance would be to get the car rolling at about 45-50, let off the accelerator and let it coast down to 30ish. Then press the go pedal hard enough so that you don't cause it to down shift but hard enough that the engine is working itself. If it pings you have too much advance.

Ignore A88. He must be having a bad day.

That is a new one on me. If you want to put a load on the engine find a hill and accelerate going up the hill.

You should read the osts on timing on this forum or go to Corvette FAQ and look up timing 101 which has some great info on how to correctly set your timing.

If you are worried about having too much advance just drive the car for a while. If it is pinging you will hear it just keep the radio turned off. Don't be too quick to figure it is a timing problem. It could well be a gasoline problem. We do not always get 93 octane when we pay for 93 octane. If pinging is evident the first thing I would do is change gas stations.

Hey Kevin,

Thanks for the info...I tried "loading the engine" like you said and heard a little pinging. Came back to the garage, checked the timing and found out it was just a little advanced (40*@ 2500 rpm @full mechanical)....retarded it to 36*, tested it again and NO PINGING.

Stuart
