My alterator belt is a bit off at the crank pully . The alternator and fan pully line up perfectly but the crank pully looks like it is too far back. If i use spacers and put it forward then the alternator will be off. It is a 72 stock 454. I have been driving it like this for 5 year now with no problem but i don't understand why it is off. The motor is original and i thought the pullys were too but maybe not? any ideas? If the picture dosn't work it is located under my corvette photos.

I am not a pro but have restored my 69 Camaro big block so here's what I know about their pulleys:
9 times out of ten, people dont sufficiently install the harmonic balancer flush with the crank. Since the crank pulley uses the crank face as a reference... the crank pulley becomes off and so most people use the wrong groove on the water pump to compensate.
Note that the correct belt route is for the inner crank groove to connect to the inner water pump groove, etc. etc.
I would first remove the harmonic balancer and reinstall it or get a new one.
When you install the balancer with the right tool, there is no give once you reach the face of the crank...you definitely feel it.
Then, reinstall the pulley.....
According to my trusty Corvette Central catalog...there is a great illustration of the belt routing....
the inner crank groove/inner water pump groove is for the alternator
the middle crank and water pump groove is for the a/c
the outer groove in the crank is for the power steering
the outer groove for the water pump is for the AIR pump
FYI- your double alternator pulley is probably wrong, buy a single pulley
IF if all doesnt come together once you reinstall the dampner, try using washers between the water pump and the pulley...or buy shims from summit racing.
Good luck and have fun...nothing beats a big block!!!
I would definetlly check and make sure you have the correct water pump. When I replaced the water pump on my 77 recently, someone told me they made a short water pump, a long water pump, and one for vettes. lol. There is a website that shows you how to measure to make sure you have the correct pump. Can't remember the name. May have been Spectre. Good luck.
