Default auto tranny issues

hey guys

have owned this 80 for 2 years now , replaced rear-end etc last winter & no probs for months

use it as my daily-driver.

got back into Canada after a motorcycle run to Eureka Springs AR & went to drive my lady home the next morn & it did not want to shift into drive (3rd)

shifts perfect into 2nd but sometimes revs & will not shift into 3rd.

fluid is at the top of the dipstick & looks red & does not smell burned.

i do not run this car hard & find it strange that i have had absolutely no warning that i would have a tranny prob.

any ideas ?

Check your vacuum modulator steel line with rubber ends.
My line became unhooked (rubber was worn out) due to vibration.
I crawled underneath and noticed it became unplugged at the modulator end.
(My tranny felt like it was stuck in first gear)
I pushed it back in and all was well!

no

i went to a GM dealer after i got off work at 7am & they wanted the car for 3 or 4 hours-not

then i went to a tranny place - put it up on the hoist & checked every line, (i had no idea how many little hoses & lines...wow)

everything is attached where it should be attached & there is plenty of vacuum , on the line to the tranny soooo...

the tranny dude suggested a bottle of stuff that may unstick a valve, inside the tranny - i told him to order it & i pick it up on Monday morn.

this is a strange 1 - i know i don't drive it hard & the tranny has shifted perfect over the last 2 years & i drive it almost everyday???

the tranny dude also suggested i manually shift it...so i tried this.

it goes into R perfect

1st is strong - no slipping then it goes into 2nd but when the tac hits 2500 it won't shift into 3rd

guess i'll see what happens when i pour the bottle of stuff into it Monday morn

I had that problem in the past. Changing filter and fluid fixed it for a while, but when the problem recurred twice, I pulled the TH350 and rebuilt it. There was a lot of wear on the input shaft requiring replacement, and the governor bore was worn beyond limits; further the 4-element direct clutch was toast - nearly all the friction material was gone.

I did a high performance rebuild with good input shaft, new steels and frictions, all new bushings, a better intermediate overrun clutch race, upgraded to a 5 disk direct clutch and a Trans-Go shift kit. No further problems.
