Default I need input on removing smog equipment

Can someone tell me exactly what components of my smog stuff I can remove? I have a '79 L-82, stock motor w/AIR pump, etc. I want this stuff out, but I'm not sure to what extent I can remove the stuff. I also want to confirm the size of the plugs on my exhaust manifold that I will need. I believe they're 5/16NF?

In Connecticut I took off all of it. I still have the cat and the PCV valve but everything else is gone.

Sorry 'bout double post - this computer is slower than I am.

Thanks for the reply SH, but what I'm looking for is WHAT do I take off. In example, I know I can remove the AIR pump and belt and the tubing going into my exhaust manifold, but what else? Can I take out the EGR valve? Basically I'm looking for someone to tell me specifically what I can remove. BTW, I don't have to worry about passing emissions...

you can remove the A.I.R. on the exhaust and plug them, remove the pump.

leave the cat or update but think about being Green....

You can remove any and all of it, the effect will be minimal. Except for an original pellet filled pancake cat, its not really costing you any power you can detect. That particular Cat is grossly restricting, but it can be easily replaced with a high flow unit that will free up your exhaust.

The A.I.R. - EGR and EFE can be removed, keep the PCV and charcoal cannister. Keep the dual snorkle since it allows for cooler air into the carb.

Put a Hi-flow cat in there, but don't go without one, a Hi-flow one will actually improve things.

Thanks everyone for the info. My intention isn't necessarily to try to gain horsepower, it's more to remove some clutter out of the engine compartment. I've read past posts/threads about the minimal hp gains to be had, but I'd like to "clean house" somewhat under the hood. I'm also assuming that If I were to remove the EGR, I would need to make up a blank plate to seal it off with?

Thanks again for your help

I've been thinking 'bout doing the same and have seen some expensive versions in Corvette catalogs and also some very inexpensive versions in Summit Racing and Jegs catalogs. You may want to compare both. But first thing is make sure the ones in Summit or Jegs are a direct bolt in to make it an easy swap. Maybe someone else has some more input on that?

By all means, fab a block-off plate. You can probably use a factory style gasket under it too.

Default Removing smog equipment

I have been considering this on my 81 also. Was ready to start removing until I discovered that there are no fittings on my exhaust manifold. They are simply pressed in. I am sure I can get them out, but don't need eight holes in my manifolds. I doubt that I will find any threads to put plugs in. Has anyone else come across this? I believe that you will also need to have some caps of various sizes on hand to plug vacuum lines. I know what you mean about wanting that stuff out so you can see and work on other components. You will also have to deal with the line to your cat. Good luck breaking it loose on the cat. I just cut mine off as I put on side pipes and removed the cat.

Thank you Fauxrs2 for the link! It definitely saves me time and effort not having to fabricate a block-off plate.

Dont forget to plug the holes where your TVS (thermal vacuum switch) are located - one in manifold and one in thermostat cover

Whatever you take off, keep it safely in a box for future use or
for the day when you can sell it 10-years from now for $3K probably.

I'm trying to isolate some strange vibration sounds. Can I temporarily disable the air pump by taking the belt off without damaging anything? Is there any connection between it and the ECU?
