I have a torque wrench that is calibrated in inch-lbs. (Don't ask
how I ended up with that, I don't recall).
I am going to be working on the front bearing and need to
torque the spindle nut to 12 ft-lbs. Is my conversion correct
to set my torque wrench at 144 in-lbs? (12 inch per foot x 12 ft-lbs).
And while I'm at it, after I change out the front brake calipers (leaking
again :mad ) do I need to bleed the rears? Aren't the front and
back separate systems?

On the brakes..... You only NEED to bleed the fronts. However, since you have a sucker.... errrr I mean helper to push the pedal, I would do the rears also as a flush if you have not flushed the rears in the last two years or so. Make use of help while you have it.
Thanks all. My "helper" is my wife, who says she doesn't mind,
but who also gets very impatient. Of course, I just remind her that
the 82 I'm working on is HER car. (Well maybe I shouldn't, cuz I'm
planning on doing a brake rebuild on my 78 in the spring :D )

Going from ft-lbs to in-lbs is OK but be careful when converting from in-lbs to ft-lbs (if you only have a ft-lb wrench and the spec is given in in-lbs) The graduation on a ft-lbs wrench are usually such that you could be several in-lbs off and never know it...
