So I went out last night to look over what I had in store for me to install headers on my 81. When I pulled the hood release the handle and cable came out in my hand. Broke off at the latch. Fortunately the hood did pop open. I could not thread the frayed cable back up the tube but was able to get a smaller guage wire down through as a temporary fix. Not real confident in this thin wire, but working for now. I can order the whole assembly or just the handle and cable. Has anyone had any experience in threading a new cable up through the tube and securing it?
Thanks.
I ended up replacing the whole thing. When I installed it I inadvertently pulled the handle and wire out, it was no problem reinstalling it through the tube. Hardest part was getting the new tube up through all the goo in the firewall and hooking it up. I had my dash out when I did it and it was still hard to get it in the right spot to go up through the firewall.
Here is a quick fix for anyone having a broken hood release cable as I did. No one keeps an extra on hand and if you want your hood to open while waiting for one you have ordered do this. A ten speed bike cable is the same size as your hood release. They already have the little ball on the end. Feed it through your latch and into the cable sleeve and out to where your handle was. Attach something securely to the cable for a pull. I used the 10 speed shift handle. Actually works smoother than the original did. Drip a little WD-40 into the sleeve first for an easier feed.
