I am interested in changing out my 3 speed auto on my 78 to a 5 speed manual. I found a place that has a kit and was wondering if anyone has had any dealing with them. they are: www.5speedtransmissions.com
They seem to have a good price on both the tko 500 and tko 600.
I would speak with Keisler or Classic 5 speeds in SoCal.. I have seen his site before. I used Keisler... they stand behind it. TOTAL cost was about 4k (conversion from Auto). But they had the right mounts, right shifter, pedals, pedal pads, all parts to install clutch.. etc.. I also upgraded to a better clutch as well.
Other folks have used him, but I would call Classic or Tremec. I think Classic is a little cheaper. If you call Keisler, speak with Shafi, he may drop the price $100 or so. There was also a forum member that is now a distributor for these .. you may want to do a search, as I don't recall the name.
I bought a TKO-600 and bellhousing from Standard Transmissions in Ft Worth. Sourced a flywheel and clutch elsewhere.
Made my own mount. Ebay'd pedals & clutch cross shaft and replaced bushings and seals on them.
Works great!
If you go with a 'kit' and you don't have a close to stock motor you should consider upgrading bellhousing/flywheel/clutch.
IMHO if you need a TKO-600 you should not have the 'standard' setup that comes with most kits. If you've seen the results of a failed flywheel or clutch you know what I mean. I assume vendors most will set you up with upgrades as needed.
Keisler has everything you need for a complete change over. I love mine. You do NOT have to cut anything. Just bolt it in. Call them at 865-609-8187 they are great people. They stand behind there tranny's
