Default Thermostat is shot

looks like my thermostat is shot. It's been running around 120-150 and hitting 160+ when I'm idling at lights and quickly back down when I take off.

It's been years so I don't know what's in there. What's a good thermostat? Advance auto has Stant SuperStats for $10-15. Should I go 180 or 190?

Either will work fine and Stant is a good choice.

120-150 ? a thermostat wouldnt do that would it? sounds like a bad gauge giving colder than normal operating temps. have you checked what temp with another gauge or temp gun to see what your car is actually operating at.

NO man, if the thing is stuck open, and most of the later replacements are designed to stick OPEN, the older ones seemed to fail CLOSED, and destroy engines......but if it's chilly weather, that car will run around 120f or so without any stat, or one stuck open, failed.....

the stat functions like a kind of 'gain rider' in audio electronics, keeping the volume of water regulated through the system in order to maintain temps.....

Picked up a Stant 195 degree SuperStat, Mr. G gasket & silicon for $18 and it's running at 195 on the dot.

The removed stat is stuck open.
