Default Q-Jet tuning question

I had a question or 2 to ask before my dad and I dive into my carb, its either running lean or rich, Ive got quite the hesitation on acceleration, and I hav a feeling that it hasent been touched in a FEW years

what will I defantly need to replace, I know the carb gasket, and I was thinking of going up a jet size, due to the headers a free flowing exaust, but is there anything else?

what are some other tips?

Im waiting on my "how to rebuild and modify your Rochester Quadrejet" by cliff ruggles

Im sure Ill think of more

You'll definitely want to replace the accelerator pump if you're getting a hesitation. You might as well just go to Napa and order the echelin rebuild kit specifically for your q-jet. I did mine last year and was pleased.

Is that just for rebuilds or does it include tuning parts too?

Along with the rebuild kit you'll want to get a new float and choke pulloff.

lot of times there is another hole to put the pump linkage in
(longer stroke)
put a kit in it is good ideal too!

Default Quadrajet Info

Lars Grimsrud IS the Quadrajet expert. Most on this forum will tell you to not touch your Quadrajet until you've read up on all he has to say.

Here's a link to most - maybe all - of his papers:

would O rileys have this, we dont have a NAPA, and would I be able to get bigger jets with this kit?

will these kits come with everyting that will need to be replaced on an average tune up?

dad is getting wanting to do it soon, hes getting excited, all Im waiting on is for me to finnish reading the book I bought on them

Also, What would be the correct Jet size I need if I want to go up one size. I read the paper Lars wrote and It said with free flowing exause and headers I should go up one size, what would that side be?

If you look at Lars' paper you'll see 'areas' listed. go through the tables and you'll be able to see what your 'area' will be if you go up a jet size or down a rod size.

Performance parts DO NOT come in the kits. Rods and jets can be found online but the selection is very thin. I bought a few 'swap meet' carbs for spare parts.

Don't change jet sizes until you know whether or not you're rich or lean. Start with a rebuild and adjust from there.

One of the best things you could do is to wire in an oxygen sensor and to observe whether it's rich or lean versus an indication on a manifold vacuum gauge - then you will know. BTW, there some simple rich-lean indication gauges on the market - I swear by mine as it has helped me know exactly what to do! (12.10@114.5 with a Quadrajet!)
