A vacuum reservoir is necessary. It doesn't have to be the factory unit, however. The reservoir [and back-flow valve] maintain the level of vacuum required to operate headlights and, especially, wipers even when you go WOT (no vacuum when you 'floor' it). You probably don't need the same size can as factory provides, but you still need one.
