There is a 6 wire connector I have running above the evaporator, each wire color matches at the other end of the connector: red connects to red, purple to purple etc.. the connection looks like this going from left to right:
red. blue. red
purple. red. black
My problem is that when I connect the cables the black wire terminal connect to each other and I get a sizzling spark... is this a ground gone bad..? I have disconnected these wires from the connector and electrical taped each seperated to avoid the problem but not sure what it is effecting.
Not sure what this connector and black wire is for please help if you know anything, thanks in advance. - Steve
Sounds like the starter harness. Has the starter been off? There is a black ground wire in that harness that sometimes gets connecte to the Battery Terminal on the starter.
Not sure if the starter has been off, my father in law, great mechanic, has done all the work over the years.. now my curiosity has me poking around, how things work etc.. I'll have to ask him.
So are you saying that if this is the starter harness the black wires (ground) should not be connected to the starter battery terminal.? FYI with the black wires disconnected at the connector the engine starts and runs fine..
THANKS!! Found this is indeed the starter harness...
The connector joins two black wires one found to go to the starter battery terminal - the other black wire in the connector (disconnected from the starter) black wire is still hot with key in and ignition "on"... I found this wire is getting its power from a port on the engine, a two wire plug just below the exhaust manifold on the passengers of the engine the port/plug on is just between and below the two back headers...
What is this plug for?? FYI it is a 327 small block.. I am hoping resolving this issue will help avoid the new battery I seem to need every year..
Seems like the problem is, The black wire that is hooked up the the bat terminal at the starter, should not be there. It should be grounded to the engine block or one of the bell housing bolts. The 82 wiring diagrahm does not show a black wire on the starter terminals.
Many cars have plugs that are only used for connecting factory diagnostic equipment. Your 82 is new enough that it probably has some of these types of connectors. If you can get a wiring diagram it should show the connectors and their purpose. It's pretty strange that a black wire would have power on it - maybe it's dirty and there is a colored stripe hidden on it.
