I would like to know how tight "or drag" the rear wheel bearings should be when I turn the spindle with the car in neutral?
I had the bearings and seals replaced and it takes two hands to turn the spindle when it was not installed in the car. After a 5 mile ride the whole rotor and spindle where hot, also the rotor was loose " a couple of thousands" on the spindle so I know the e-brake shoes were not dragging.
If the bearings were set too tight is it possible for the spindle to get that hot?
You shouldn't have needed to use two hands to turn the spindle when the arm was off the car. If the bearings were set too tight, the assembly is probably ruined.
Doesn't sound too good. When new and properly installed there will be slight drag and I mean slight. Finger and thumb should turn them no problem. If the PB was adjusted too tight that could cause the drag, the spindle or rotor should not be loose. I bolt the rotors on many don't and the runout will change but that won't give you tight bearings.
I've fixed many "rebuild" arms and found a lot of times the shims were not replaced and the bearings installed without any machine work. Not good. The wheel should not be hot to the touch, if so they will fail and that could be a big problem. If you want a link to building them correct, just PM me and I'll get it to you.
Stinger is correct they're probably wrecked. I would check them asap to be sure the spindles are not wrecked as well.
gtr1999- could you also please give me the same web site for rebuilding the rear bearings as you offered to give jshug. artie. my email is kars365@hotmail.com
