Is ignition shielding necessary for radio interference?
With todays engines, wires, and electronics...is the stock shielding around the distributor necessary. I have a ZZ4 with HEI distributor, and (will have) a modern stereo system. Looks like the shielding MAY fit over the larger HEI, and I like the retro "look" if I can make it fit. If not, however, will there be too much radio interference?
So long as the spark plug wires are spiral core wires, the shielding will probably not be needed. The distributor itself doesn't create a whole lot of interference and if your head unit power wires, signal wires, and speaker wires are routed away from the dash or firewall then that won't be a huge issue either.
I always recommend you run dedicated head unit power and ground wires to the battery, and any speaker wires come from an amp, hopefully in the rear of the car.
Quality shielded RCAs will also help a lot.
If that IGN shielding will fit, use it...it won't hurt, but I think you will be fine without it.
Thanks Matt, was hoping you'd chime in...The stereo system is a ways off though, but last night I was routing plug wires and installing the distributor, so the question popped in my head!
