Default Power Steering Pump Removal

What's the trick to remove the power steering pump from my '76? I removed the 3 bolts or nuts that attach it to the support bracket, it is loose, but it won't release from the lower bracket. There is a notch in the lower bracket above the pump stud that seems like it would let me slide the pump up and out, but no go. Do I need to remove the bracket with the pump?

Did you remove the nut on the back side of the power steering pump reservoir? When reinstalling this nut make sure you use the correct torque specks as this stud is spot welded from the inside of the reservoir.

There are 2 studs on the back side of the pump. I removed the nuts from both. There is a bolt on the lower front side, which I also removed. It is completely loose, but will not slide out of the bracket.

Any other ideas or tips?

Leave the bracket that attaches to the motor mount on the car. Just take the nut off the stud that goes through the adjustment slot.

For the other bracket (the one under the water pump) leave it attached to the PS pump.

Remove the 2 long bolts from this bracket and remove bracket and pump as a unit.

That's exactly how I ended up removing it. It looked like it was engineered to let you remove the pump without the bracket, but I couldn't do it. Thanks for the tip. I find it's easier to post a quick question on this forum instead of wrestling with a stubborn part for an hour!

You're Welcome!

Here's another tip. Mine is a 77. Take everthing off the PS pump if you send it out to get it rebuilt. Including the stud that goes through the slot on the motor mount bracket. Keep the cap and all the hardware except the pulley.

I sent mine out for a rebuild and it came back without the stud. I thought I could just use a bolt where the stud goes. Filled it up with fluid and it leaked bad even with the bolt in it. Had to go to the U-Pull it junkyard and get the correct stud. Got one off a 77 Buick

Thanks. My rebuilt pump came without the same stud. I kept my core until I got the new one home. I also transferred the belt guard. I installed new hoses, and bled the system. Except for removing the pump, the job was easy.
