1982 Shifter Boot Replacement

1982 Shifter Boot Replacement
I just bought a 1982 vette (automatic trans.) and the shifter boot need replaced. I have the new boot and a couple of manuals, but neither has instructions for replacing or removing the boot. Can anyone please help? Thanks!

Not sure how much different an 82 is from a 74, but here goes.disconnect & move parking brake cover back an inch or so for clearance, remove center console. Shifter has 3 or 4 bolts holding it in. remove those, no need to disconnect shifter or wiring. There are about a dozen screws (5/16th head) holding the boot on.
It is amazing how much heat a ripped boot will let through.

Many thanks for your reply! I appreciate it! The new shifter boot is rigid on the bottom - the bottom is rectangular in shape with a black band around it. No screw holes are in it. If I can get the center shifter plate off, I can go from there.

ok I did this on my 82. Remove the **** from the shifter. Remove the driverside carpet on the transmission tunnel. There are four scres that hold the boot in place on the shifter console. Remove those 4 screws. pry the old boot off and remove. reverse the order for installation.
