Default headers

Anybody using block hugger headers? I have a set of Allen's side pipes that are bolted up to the stock manifolds on my 77. I would like to use the same side pipes with the block hugger headers if it will work without modifying the side pipes. The side pipes are 2 inch at the manifold and then change to 2.5.

Thanks, Bill

Default block hugger headers

I don't but did have block hugger headers and the down pipe just had about 3" sawed off and the collector welded to the down pipe. The collector off the header was roughly in the same postion as the stock cast irons. That's what your intrested in right you want to be able to use your stock side pipes with out hacking them up.

Yes, I don't want to cut up the pipes

I could see that working. You would still have to cut off the stock flanges and weld the collectors on because in that respect they are still like the full length headers they have the 3 bolt flange with a gasket in between them.

Hmm, can't you just use the flanges that are on the pipes, they have a 3 bolt flange already, just not sure if they'll mate to the hugger.

I've got the Corvette Central side pipes and have thought about doing the same thing.

Thanks, Bill
I have McJAck's shorty headers on my 78. I wanted a shorty header that was an exact dupilicate of the stock exhaust manifold dimensionally which would hook up to a stock style 2.5in Stainless steel exhaust. I already had the exhaust system on the car and did not want to change it. Plus, having had cars with full length headers in the past on other cars and not interested in the fit issues with block headers or road clearance issues with full length headers, I guessed that McJack's headers would give me a little bit of both worlds. I could not be happier with them since having a street car, I did not need full length headers and they fit in the engine bay perfectly like the stock exhaust manifolds. The only issues with McJack's headers which are indiviudally hand made was that they were a little pricey. I waited 25 years for someone to offer their characteristics so I bit the bullet and bought them.

Absolutely! With the 2.5 in true duals and Monza Turbo mufflers, the sound was terrific. After I added the McJacks in place of the stock exhaust manifolds, the decibel level at all RPM's increased considerably, not obnoxious but more "mean" almost like adding more "bass" sound. There is no question that more exhaust is flowing. More like the sound from block headers, i would guess, but without the fit and clearance issues.

Thanks for the help. That is probably what I'm going to go with.
