This is a fun topic. Those were the days when Supertuning was very effective and keeping those cars tuned up was a chore. When you here a guy say he smoked a real L88 with his Boss 302 he probably left out the part about the Chevy was loaded up and running on 6 cylinders ect.
One of the worst stompings I saw was a well prepared 67 Chevelle with the real 375 hp 396 and 4.11 gear w/4spd.Some new guys showed up in a near new 72 455 GTO 4spd and thumped the 396 with the a/c on and did not get out of 3rd gear in the 1/4.
I have owned many Mopars and my favorite and fastest was a 68 Road Runner 383"was 10.5-1 that year" w/3.55 gear and 4spd.It got 17 mpg at a steady 55 mph.Mods were headers, dual point and carbed leaned out .
I had a 68 RT Charger that at 4200lbs was anything but quick .A tire smoking 14.87 was it's best @ 104mph? but let me catch you at 40 mph and you just got burned!
Then a guy with a little 71 Duster with 340 auto and 3.23 gears got turned onto a new thing called a stall speed converter. He put 3.55 gears in it and some little cheater slicks and left so hard the biggest motored cars could not catch him.Cheater! He He!
A really neat thing I saw was a 72 Datsun PU with a powerglide 456 gear and a stock LT1 out of a 70 1/2 Camaro. He really put it on a Baldwin Motion Camaro!
The funnest car I have driven to date though with exeption to a turbocharged Miata was my friends 70 1/2 Camaro Z28.4spd,4.11 gear it just seemed to do everything just right exept cruise on the hiway at 80!The contolled powerslides were unbelievable.

Back in the day, my first muacle car was a 1969 Z-28 Camaro.
Thought it was pretty fast until a guy in a 62 Nova with a 327 , 4 sp Muncie and 3:73 rear 12 bolt came along. From a 30 mph roll, I could take him but dead stop the 302 was just too light on torque.
Big dog was a 69 Hemi Road Runner with a torque flight and 3:55 rear. Car had headers n big rear tires. I think that large rear fender wells and good exhaust was Chrystlers strong suit. That car was killer off the line but not all that impressive on top end. From a roll u could stay with him, dead stop he was out there two cars n u could not catch him.
Any other Chrystlers were not all that impressive. Once I swapped the 302 for an LT-1 350 inch motor, that Camaro was pretty fast. 13.8 @ 102 mph with a set of street headers and 4:10 rear.
This was all in 1970-1972 when no one had nitrous or turbos.

muscle heyday.
I feel fortunate to have been in highschool in early 80s. When my friends and i were 15.5 and 16 years old, we saved our dollars and pennies to buy higher mileage worn cars that most saw as used up. My first car was a 68 barracuda i paid $80 for. My friends drove 67 mustangs,67 SS396 chavelle,70 ss454 cowl induct,68 charger r/t,68 gtx and super bees,442 olds,z28s,trans ams,...even my brother had a 69amx. Point is these cars were dirt cheap then, some undwe $1000. Nearly all under $2000. (I really wish i had bought that 64stang and gtojudge with hideaway lights and the fancy hood.(both were $400) At one point i built a Plymouth RR clone from a $300 Satellite and about $12k. I cant find a junk 71 satellite nowadays for $12k.
Back then we were deff right place at the right time.

Old post, old argument. Probably doesn’t matter much below 5000 rpm in a bias ply tire street car imo. IMO 440s are a truck motor or good street car motor due to the great torque and lower hp potential up top (due to the limited size of the intake runners).
Hemi motors (gen2) are way better due to the flow potential and the fact that most funny cars and dragsters went to that configuration for decades. Hemi bang for the buck is by far THE Worst. Bang for the buck is by far the best in a big block Chevy. Stock or aftermarket.

440 6 pack , the baddest of the bad 440 only had a 2.08 Intake valve with about a 230 cfm on that big 4.3 inch bore motor, unfortunately Chrysler put all the money on the 426 Hemi and never improved on the other engines in its line up

You don’t have to sell me on mopar, lol. I have had several and love them. Currently have a 5.7 challenger and a gen 2 540 hemi 68 Cuda. I agree the gen2 hemi is great, just ridiculously expensive. All I’m saying is that the stock 440 head configuration is limiting much more than a BB Chevy. Stock 440 motors are going to get maybe 500 hp with race fuel and a flat tappet?
my brother bracket races a 66 valiant 440 with Brodix heads And a mild hydraulic cam and low compression. 9:1 ish. Probably 450 hp and the heads could support way more. Most of the mopar guys race 400 low deck stroked blocks which give roughly 450 ci. They are better than the 440 in many ways. Ppl can get 550-700 hp out of them depending on compression and heads, but not stock heads. Stock 440 heads aren’t that great.

The engine in her was built by me on my carport and it is a pump gas 440 with a hydraulic flat tappet cam and factory 915 heads. Runs well into the 11's in the quarter mile on motor and deep into the 10's with nitrous and I drive this car often and to my job which is a 70 mile round trip. The car weighs just under 3500 lbs without me in it and will get almost 13 mpg if I don't get into the Holley 750 double pumper too often. I really studied this engine and made sure the parts matched the torque band and I feel I got it dialed in pretty good.
