Default Power Antenna Troubleshooting

How do you troubleshoot the power antenna on an 82. I replaced my plastic cable and the antenna works fine using a battery charger. When I put the antenna back in it seems to keep trying to run.

I also installed a new radio and have the antenna power to the switched circuit. Orange is hot always, and switched is yellow I believe. Could the relay possibly be bad or something else?

Antennae has green -red - black
red always hot - black always ground

Green goes to the radio antennae wire not the wire that turns on at powerup and tells an amplifier to power on

double check schematic from radio
I thought power antennae wires were light blue?

Mine has gray, white green at the antenna. Power to the relay is from orange & yellow. Further look at the schematic I might see a problem. The power antenna wire from the new radio is light blue. Now I'm wondering which wire that would connect to. I used the yellow wire back to the relay to indicate power. I think that is correct.

Thanks

I've been tinkering with my 78 antenna as well and I'm using the colored schematic.

Yes for the gray, white and green from relay to the antenna. Gray is up...white is down. On my 78, these three are cabled together

As you've pointed out, orange, yellow and black route from the relay back to the radio or harness. A gray (20 gauge) also routes from the relay back to the harness, apparently accompanying the yellow.

From Relay
Orange - fuse panel
Yellow - to radio
Black - to ground

Radio
Yellow(20) to harness
Yellow(18) to relay
Black(20) to harness

The blue wire may be the one from the radio to the relay.

For mine the ground is always attached
The hot is always hot

The green is the key (power to it and it goes up)
(no power to it and it goes down)
When extended or retraceted fully it clicks twice and stops

pretty simple. based on wire colors mine's probably aftermarket

I found a section last night in my service manual I did not notice. It looks like I have some more options for troubleshooting. When putting the rear cable in, it says to fully extend the antenna for replacement. I put mine in where it looks like it would fit correctly. Like I said earlier, if I use a battery charger to test it works correctly up & down. It's when I try and run it with the relay the problem started. I going to check it out a little closer.

Thanks
