Default Primed engine

I am building a new engine, it has all new parts GM, Crane and Trick Flow. The block is a 1971, 350 four bolt. It has been bored 40 over. I am only getting oil on the driver side of the engine. I pulled the three plugs on the back of the block above the cam. Oil is coming out of them.

Any help is appreciated,
Thanks

I believe you need to use a special priming tool that will help direct the oil like the distributor would if it were installed. If you look down the dist hole while priming you may see the leakage of oil that would be directed the the other bank.

I agree, The best priming tool is a dist. with the teeth of the gear machined off. We have had one for 30 years now and it works fine.

Yep, rent or buy the proper priming tool, use a high speed corded electric drill, and have someone rotate the engine while you prime. I usually do it for at least ten minutes, turning as I go, sometimes longer.

Thanks for your responses. I have been priming with a priming tool and an electric drill. I took your advice Db, I turned the engine wile priming for twenty minutes. Numbers 1,3,5,7 are flowing fine, 2,4,6,8 nothing. Is it possible my half inch drill turns to slow?

Can you show us a picture of the priming tool? I recall someone having problems like this before and it turned out he had bout a 'priming tool' that was just a long shaft. The proper one looks like the body of a distributor so it seals off the oil passages allowing oil to flow under pressure just like during normal operation.

Here you go Db

I tried priming for another hour and turning the engine over. Finally small amounts of oil were coming out of 2,4,6 and 8. Know where near as much as 1,3,5 and 7.

Okay, you're good to go. That is the proper tool, and even the slightest amount of oil is all you need up there to ensure things are lubed properly. Once the engine is started, there will be plenty flowing since the pressure generated by the engine is far superior to the drill.
