hi,
I am real new to the world of chevy engines so please bear with me.
What is the CFM rating on the 72 454 engine.
I just picked up a 72 and apparently the oem Qjet needs to be rebuilt. So, I say to myself, "Self, why not an intake and carb upgrade."
I did some searching. I read this a few times. The oem intake on the 454 is kinda restrictive so an upgrade might not be a bad idea.
OK that sounds great now which one. I also read that only the edelbrock Torker II will allow for a square bore carb and still fit the oem hood. Isnt the powerband on the torker II starting at like 2000 rpms.
What will that do for low end off the line power?
I dont want to put too big of a carb on it and kill throttle response but I cant find the oem specs. I looked up online a bunch of carb calculators and they all say for that motor at 80% VE a 600cfm is perfect. That just seems a little small for that big of motor. THe holley page says anywhere from a 650 and up.
It would be a mistake not to rebuild the 750 cfm q-jet and stick with a dual plane intake like an Edelbrock Performer. A single plane intake is better off for high RPM use, and has a Torker II ever been worth a crap for anyone? If you want a top line rebuild contact Lars or read up on his papers for some great tips. Yes i like the edelbrock performer intake. As a matter of fact there is one on my classic mustang now. However from what I understand on a 454 the Edelbrock performer will not clear the stock hood.
I know on the sbc, the performer is the same height as stock. I thought the BB was the same. Most Q-jets are 750 cfm, but the BB ones are 795. It is a variable cfm carb either way so economy and throttle response are good. I'd rebuild the Q-jet and double check on the Performer fitment. God bless, Sensei

Thanks for the help. Looks like I need to do some more research on the quadrjet. I didnt know that they they were variable.
I have been doing some searching around and found these,
all these threads say that the torker II is the only manifold that fits under the stock hood. Its either that or the intake off of a 69 390hp/427 but I cant find one of those anywhere. Looks like I may just be gettiing the leaky oem carb rebuilt and sticking with it. Most of the theads I read said that the torker is not that great but its all you got.
Most of the time when the books say that an intake will not fit under a stock hood, they mean with all stock components. If you are not concerned with originality, you can run a slightly taller intake and a drop base air cleaner assembly and have no problem.
my 72 with a 502 & stock hood will not work with anything but a torker,i measured and checked all the air cleaner & carb combinations that i could think of. the only option i could come up with is an L88 hood.

thats good to know.
there is always the L36 intake off of a 427.
i guess i can get one one of those off of ebay and mock it up before i start bolting anything down.
