I'm cleaning up before I put my t-stat housing on. I want to make sure it's clean. WIll 3M adhesive remover work or should I go get some brake/parts cleaner? I'm using Blue RTV as a gasket. Cast iron housing.
I've got everything cleaned up. I just want to make sure there is no antifreeze or anything that will compromise the RTV. The package says to clean "with residue free solvent, like parts/break cleaner". I'd have to run to the store, but I already 3M adhesive remover. I'm just trying to stay out of the "Masters of the Obvious" post.
I don't think that will do a very good job. I usually scrape it clean with a screw driver or similar tool and perhaps a little sand paper.
I use a flat razor blade to scrape off any old gasket material, and then I use a jitter bug sander with 180 and then 300 grit paper to sand it perfectly smooth.
I then tape a sheet of 8.5"x11" 180 to a flat counter or table top, and run the T-stat housing around in figure 8's until it's sanded smooth. A few rubs on some 300 grit paper, and you can almost bolt it on with no sealant at all. A little bit of RTV and you're all set.
