Default melted gaskets

I yanked my valve covers because of a oil leak and to retorque alum heads and my gaskets were melted and burnt right above header pipes they are 4year old steel core/laminate,I didnt have this problem with the sportsman iron heads.are the cork laminate the best? Whats everyone else run.thanx

I now have some of the steel cored rubber ones too. They seem fine, but I wonder if maybe you're running lean or your timing is off causing a higher than normal exhaust temperature.

I put about 900 miles on it last year and about 300 this year,I had them off two months ago and they looked fine the only change was richen the idle a little.The innotek meter read 20-22;1at idle
