so i decied to take the 350 out of my 80 vette and stroke it to 383. i'v found a lot of kits and everything online that are avalible. from what i'v beening reading it doesn't seem like a completly over whelming task. i'v never rebuild an engine before or anything but i'v been rebuilding apache helicopers for 6 years now so i'm fairly confident that i can handle this. i'm just looking for any tips and advice that any of you experianced guys can give me. thanks a lot hope to hear from ya.
I'm not the expert but I just finished stroking my 80 L82. I used the "How to rebuild the small block Chevrolet" My recommendations, based on my mistakes/issues are:
1. Use ARP bolts (completely clean them prior to use)
2. I went with forged rotating assembly.
3. Check the rear main bearing oil supply hole. Mine did not line up with the bearing.
3. Use permatex #2 on all the head bolts
4. Check oil pan for clearancing prior to adding oil
5. Definitely use the one piece oil pan gasket
If you are stroking the 350 block you will have to clearance the block. I run a minimum of .050 clearance everywhere. You will have to mock up the crank and a rod or two fro each cylinder and measure the clearance. I took quite a bit of time doing this and removed quite a bit of material from the block. The more time spent here the better off you are. You do not want anything touching at 6000+ rpm. Also check the cam to rod clearance. depending on type and lift of cam you might need a small base circle cam. I run a big solid flat tappet and did not need a small base circle cam. Mine runs to 7000 rpm a lot and never had a problem.
