About 6 months ago (warranty expired) I installed a 2004R in 74 vette. Has worked great till lately. Problem: ___BEFORE__ transmission gets to normal operating temperture I shift into reverse and it instantly goes into reverse gear-I shift into a forward gear and it take 10-15 seconds to go into gear. Once it has shifted to forward gear it shifts reverse/forward normally. Any suggestions as what problem is/what to check. Thanks
it may not be under warranty, but any reputible shop should give a phone consult as to possibilities... maybe there is some strange recall that you might find out about if you call them?
You probably have already checked the fluid level-Right?

I had a buddy that was complaining about his tranny, I asked him if he checked the fluid level and if the fluid was brown or smelled burnt. We troubleshot other things till I wanted to double checked the level. Told him to start it up so we could check the level...the look on his face told me everything. 2 quarts low on tranny fluid.

There is a big difference in fluid level between engine running and engine off. Running is the proper way to check for fluid, and your symptom does indicate a low level of fluid.

Checked fluid at operating temp and engine running.
