I am new to Corvettes and new to the forum so I will need a lot of help. I bought an original #'s matching 69 conv with a 350/350 4-spd that had been in storage for the last 8 years. I have been trying to get it on the road and have been having carb/gas issues. I had the Rochester rebuilt by highly respected local engine builder and he thinks since this engine is the high horse high compression engine it should be run on a mixture of cam2 and pump gas? I have been using premium pump gas with Lucas octane boost and not had a lot of success. Seems to load up and caugh when I try to accelerate hard even after the rebuild. Any ideas?
It sounds like your tune, not the gas. Carb needs adjustments, and you need to check your timing and total advance. You may have issues with the vacuum advance. Gas issues will appear as pinging or detonation.
BTW, welcome to the forum. Lets see some pictures of your ride.

Definitely a carb and ignition issue. I have an original 70-350/350. Once I resolved all the tuning issues it pinged a lot. I backed off the timing a bit and it helped. The only way I was able to eliminate the pinging completely was a mixture of CAM 2 and Premium. Make sure you use the CAM 2 with lead. I believe it is the higher octane.
In MD I have to pump the CAM 2 in to a container, transfer to the vette or face a big fine. Make sure you are allowed to pump it directly in to the car or if there is a track close by you can fill up there.
Once tuned with the right fuel the car will run great! A lot of times if you need to have the carb and distributor done together. A bad distributor can sure look like carb issues.
If you can, send them both to LARS on this forum. The guys here swear by him. I have not had any direct dealings with LARS yet.
I have a 327/350 4 speed and run on premium unleaded (with CD-2 lead substitute for the valves) and have had no problems. My timing is bumped a hair back and the carb is jetted a little fat. I know this is pretty basic, but are you still running the original ignition points set up and if so, are the points adjusted correctly ?? burned up ??
We do have a local station with cam2 but I have heard you have to pump it to a can first here in Iowa as well. But I really want to cruise it so I don't know how to do that with cam2 having such limited availability. Good to hear sucess on just premium.
I have added the Petronix electronic ignition to eliminate the points and the high volt coil as well.
There is no need for lead substitutes. That's an old myth that just won't go away.
But mine was totally rebuilt and we never thought about hardened valve seats when the heads went to the machine shop until way after the fact......., like when the motor was together and running in the car. So....., how would I protect them without a lead substitute ?? It's cheap insurance......... the concentrated CD-2 bottle costs less than $10 and treats something like 320 gallons of gas (1 oz for every 10 gallons... I think).
