Hello all, my diff is running hot and is making God awful noises. Where is the fill plug located on the pumpkin and can I access it just by raising the car? Do I have to remove any suspension components? Anyone have a great idea on how to remove the old oil and fill up with the new? Thanks, John
If your diff is like the earlier ones I know about, the fill is up on the side, about 3/4 of the way up. There is no drain; you have to use a sucker to get the old oil out.
If your diff is making noises while moving in a straight line you've got bigger problems and should remove it and open it up. If its only noisy while turning the problems could be the clutches, which may be "fixable" with new oil and the limited-slip additives.
Thanks, I have the correct lube and all, but I am wondering if maybe the rear end is shot cause it clunks a lot once it is warmed up in any direction. I notice it a lot when driving slow, starting out, and backing up both straight and turning. I will try changing the oil first though. I thought about putting bigger gears in it in the future anyway. Thanks, John
Not to hi-jack your thread...Do you have to jack up car to get to plug? It's an '81. I've read some threads where some remove the spare carrier and some don't. I tried crawling under and looking for a plug, but didnt see one. Think I remember seeing a tag like Fonz69 said.
