Great info. When I grab my rag joint and rotate the shaft back and forth I hear a clank clank from inside the gear box. Empty for sure. I'm going to remove a bolt today and do the straw check.
A turkey baster is a must tool for the garage and the boat. If you are having any trouble getting the mixture into the box try using a large seringe. My wife is a nurse and she brought home a few seringes that are up to 1 1/2" in diameter and 6" long. The plunger helps push harder.
Gear box has plenty of lube in there AND like Gary said, the cover is ALUMINUM By looking at mine before I cleaned it, I could have swore it was CAST IRON
BTW - what does the little tab with number on it indicate, that is sitting under LOWER bolt?
