Ran the wire wheel once over the bottom for some touch up paint and ta da! pin hole surprise. So where is the cheapest gas tank from guys? I seen one one eklers for 2 something. I'm sure someone has been here before. Thanks for any help.
Thanks for the replies guys. I looked into contemporary and it says they want 500 on thier web site for a 79 gas tank. I couldn't find anything on quantum, got a link?
Doesnt your tank have a plastic liner? Does it leak out of the pinholes?
If my tank did have a liner/bladder it must be gone now, the bottom of the tank barely had any rust on the outside, but it did start leaking out of the one pinhole i uncovered. I know it had alot of water in the tank when i bought it from sitting in some florida rainstorms without a gascap. An interesting temporary fix i found out was to rub dial soap on the pinhole to shortly stop the leak so you can get some epoxy on it. Its worked great so far, I hope it holds till i find another tank.
It's possible that the bladder in the tank has cracked. Be careful when looking for replacements. I have heard that the repro's don't have a bladder. I would look for a good used one...

Are you sure it was leaking gasoline and not water out of the pinholes, ive seen condensation form between the plastic liner and the metal outside?
Possibly the water could have infiltrated in between the bladder and the steel and that is what you see seeping out. I would wait a while and see if it stops. If it does then refill partly with gas and see what happens. I don't think the water can be able to damage the bladder.

That is almost the sole cause of failure of all the later C3 tanks....except damage of course, and some tanks that are exposed to the elements without an external coating.
79 had a solid plastic liner inside the metal shell and no bladder....condensation will build between the metal shell and the liner causing rust from the inside out.
It is never revealed until a fuel leak in the liner itself, then fuel leaks out any pin-holes in the shell.
Then there are the tanks that the liner is leaking for a couple of years and it is not known until a pin-hole in the metal shell happens, and allows the fuel to leak out.
These tanks are hard to come by, and when they are found, they are high $$$....some people are fabbing other year of tanks because of the availability, some shell out the $$ for the re-pops starting to show up, and some are installing fuel cells and fabbing those.
There are plastic liner repair kits and then POR-15 the metal shell.
The Re-pops have no baffles, bladder or liner and no warranty.
From what I could find, they are also made in China.
I opted not to go that way.
I considered a fuel cell, but didn't want the extra fab work.
I posted up in the parts section here and had 3 or 4 fellow members reply with perfectly good used OEM tanks all for under $150. I ended up with a low mileage tank from a 1980 for under $100 shipped to me. It was perfect condition.
Also wanted to mention, you may need a set of new tank straps when replacing your tank. My straps where shot and plan on replacing the rubber lines up there too. 3/8 and 5/16-a couple feet of bulk will do.
Also-Don't buy the anti-rub anti-vibration tank to strap protectors from Ecklers or the like! Supposedly OEM replacements.... Guess my expectations where too high. They where like $10 and where nothing but Roofing tar paper cut down to 3 inch wide strips! Still had the white paint lines on them!

I think the original factory anti-rub strips were in fact roofing tar paper. I got mine from Dr. Rebuild. It's the crossmember strips that are about 3 inches wide. The strap strips were perhaps an inch wide. Not very expensive, about $10 also.
Also, starting in 73 or so, a plastic sheet was added to be held in place by the tank straps and cover the rear end of the tank. Rear end collision protection I suppose. It'll fit earlier tanks and is only a few dollars. Got one for my 70.
