Hey Guys...........Needing a little help installing new ignition switch on a '73. I knew I couldn't replace it while the column was still in place like other chevys on that era......so I took the two bolts off holding the steering column and thought it would drop down......it just stayed there. Will I have to take it loose at the firewall? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Loosen the bolts at the firewall and it should drop far enough to get at the switch. But watch that as it drops the bracket with your first 2 bolts you removed doesnt tear the ears off the lower dash.
You didn't mention if you had a T&T column or a standard (non-adjustable) type. Replacing the switch is pretty generic but the switch adjustment procedure is just a bit different because the T&T and standard switches operate in opposite directions.
Here is the address for a paper on dropping the steering column and replacing the ignition switch (disregard the section on the dimmer switch - that is for 1977 columns and later).
