Default QUICK, need quadrajet help. please

My dad I are were working on his quadrarjet (72 350) and trying to get his idle tubes out, we got the right sized punch, and tried to get the tube out from the collar, unfortunatly both the collar and the tube went south. We are thinking the only way to get them out is to get a small easy-out set and just buy new tubes and collars

any better ideas, we are trying to get it back on the road by the weekend, any input please!

Thanks SO much!!!

Maybe someone else will know what you are talking about and answer, but I'm not sure what the "idle tubes" are. A picture might be worth a thousand words, otherwise, please describe the part you are working on in detail. God bless, Sensei

OK, if you look at the right side, there are a series of holes (4 small holes in a curved line) the second one down (only one with brass in it) is the hole Im talking about, the brass is the idle tube, and we need to get it out

any ideas are welcome!

Okay, I see what you are talking about now. Now I have to ask, why are you taking them out?

I am not a professional carb man, but I have never taken them out of any Quadrajet I have ever rebuilt (about a dozen or so). Even with a "barn find" BB Q-jet that was covered in mud and dirt dobber nests and seized up, I just soaked it in laquer thinner and scrubbed it, then blew compressed air through all the passeges (including those tubes). I also had to soak that one for a few days in PB Blaster, tapping it regularly with a hammer to free everything up.

Just doing this, making any repairs (and/ or mods), installing a kit and making the usual adjustments, I have never had a Q-jet fail to perform correctly.

I would just leave them alone. If you are sure you have already damaged them, you may need more expertise than I can offer. Try Lars (v8fastcars@msn.com). God bless, Sensei

The way you get them out is:

You tightly thread in a sheetrock screw then heat the casting with a small pinpoint blowtorch. Put a wrench across the top of the carb to give you some leverge and take a pair of diagonal cutters under the head of the sheetrock screw and against the wrench and pry up the tube. Don't be afraid to really thread in the sheetrock screw, they're pressed in pretty tight.

You can buy new tubes from Cliff's High Performance in Ohio. He also sells a real good book on rebuilding/modifying Q-Jets.

But you're showing a picture of the tubes, did you already get them out?? Or are you referring to the idle restrictors that you're trying to get out??

Every book I have read says to pull them to clean them properly, "you get a poor idle if you dont"

Don't be afraid to drill the top a little to get more of the screw in, you're going to replace them anyway.
