Default Almost There!

My heads came in on Christmas Eve via Santa Clause (UPS Man). These heads are awesome. "206" closed chambered heads, intake ports gasket matched, exhaust ports gasket matched to 2" header primaries, bowls blended, 2.19/1.88 valves, unshrouded combustion chambers, polished combustion chambers. I took the heads apart only to find that there are NO valve seals, NONE not even on the intake valves! Is that pretty common for drag racers to do (these heads were off of a '75 454 Camaro running 10.90s)? I'm going to get a set of Comp Cams umbrella seals for them.

With the heads apart the next step is to go to the machine shop. Within the next week or two I'll probably make a trip over. I'm going to get the block, heads and crank hot tanked, get the 454 bored over +.060" and have new cam bearings put in. All the work is going to cost $240...I really didn't think that was too bad. I'm also going to check with them to see how much it's going to cost to balance the engine.

My rods should be coming in sometime next week. I purchased a set of CAT 4340 Forged H-Beam Rods w/ 7/16" Cap Screws. I went with CAT over Eagle because they fit into my budget MUCH better (picked the rods up for $330 shipped to my house). The rods are brand new still in the box.

Everything is going smooth so far (knock on wood) and it would appear as though I will hit my target date without any problems. I can't wait!

P.S. I have also decided to knix the idea of the Mickey Thompson ET Streets for the time being. I'm going to get a set of BF Goodrich 275/60/15s for the back and be content. Until I can afford the Corvette 12 bolt rear end, I'm going to stick with street tires.

Bence: Those Drag radials? I just got a set from santa 275/60/15 BFG drag radials. They look sweet on the rims. Now if I can get my car back from the shop to put em on. :flag

Chris:
Oh you'll hear it and possibly see it. I'm going to try to get one of my computer buddies to help me record some .wav files of the engine. I also want to get some burnout footage. I'll see if my buddy can help me out.

Clink:
No, no drag radials just the regular Radial T/As. I'm worried that the 550ft lb or torque the 467 will be putting out might be too much for my rear end. I figure I'm better off not hooking up....plus the Radial T/As are cheaper :D

Bence, I'm running 245 radial T/A's right now, and I think they're a great tire for their super low price. They hook up great! Just don't do 150MPH with them, ok? And where the heck are the pictures of your new heads?

Bence,

Congrats on the engine buildup. I can't wait to hear how your 454 runs when finished. I am also working on a 454 buildup. I have the '73 049 cylinder heads completed and now I must get a shortblock built. I went with Comp Cams XE274H, so I am anxious to see how this thing runs after consulting with other forum members and Chevy High Performance magazine recommending it.

Keep us informed!!! Post some pics of the heads!

Bob

Bence,

I bet your UPS Man was very excited to carry those heads up to your house. :yesnod:

Sounds like you are making real progress with your buildup.

John.

Joe:
My digital camera is a POS. However, I will try to snap some photos of some of my go-fast goodies within the next day or so. 150mph with radial T/As, no....especially considering that the Radial T/As are only speed tested for up to 117mph (or something like that). But they will be seeing some nice 0-60 runs :). The 275/60 BF Goodrich Radial T/As are good enough for what I'm after for right now.

Budman:
Yep, actually I already have both sitting in my basement. I'm going with a Holley 850cfm Double Pumper for my carburetor. I have chosen to go with the Edelbrock Torker II Intake. I chose the Torker II because it will (supposedly) fit under my stock hood. I am gasket matching the small Torker II intake ports to help it flow a little better.

One more paycheck and I'll have enough money to assemble my engine :yesnod:
