Hello all.
I'm in the process of replacing the small block in my '79 with a big-block. I had Hooker header sidepipes on the small block, and also have a set for the big-block. Trouble is, I didn't order new mufflers, I didn't realize there was a difference. I was just doing a bit of research and learned that what I have are the 4" reverse-flow small block mufflers, and the big-block calls for a different part, I'm assuming the big-block ones are less restrictive. Here's my question, what are your thoughts on going with the 4" reverse flow big-block mufflers, or the 4" glass packs, or are there better options I may not be aware of for mufflers for this application? I've seen some that look like big auger bits, but I really don't know much about them. This car won't be a daily driver, so noise level is not a huge concern, although I don't want to rattle my neighbor's house (like I did when I fired it up with open pipes )
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and if any additional info is needed just let me know.
Thanks much, I checked them out and that seems like the ticket, shame they don't accept credit cards or paypal, I'd like to have them on the way as soon as possible.
The other option is the Hooker Max flow -half the price of JCL. It uses the same 4inch pipe w/ a 2.5 open core. I made the same swap last winter, and found that the reverse flows which worked for my 350,choked my big block. They just don't have enough core displacement ,not to mention ,you don't put in Bigblock with sidepipes to be quiet. So make some noise and have fun.
